白蛇传

传说（一）
西湖之畔雷峰塔、多少游人抱不平；相传塔压白娘子，提起无不恨凶僧。

下凡（二）
峨嵋修炼数千年，白蛇青蛇同下山；柳雨桃烟西湖畔，姐妹双双听杜鹃。

游湖（三）
苏堤柳丝遮游船，西湖岸上遇许仙；细雨轻打桃花片，姐妹避雨上了船

结亲（四）
有义有情小许仙，白蛇红楼把伞还；风雨同舟成花烛，许仙白蛇结姻缘。

开药铺（五）
指望夫妻过百年，成家立业开药店；保和堂中广济众，驱散瘟疫美名传。

遇法海（六）
法海和尚住金山，扬言驱疫是违天；下山警告小许仙，说他遇妖有祸端。

端阳（七）
家家蒲艾挂门墙，夫妻二人庆端阳；许仙捧出酒和菜，苦劝白蛇饮雄黄。

见蛇（八）
雄黄饮罢显原形，许仙揭帐大吃惊；想起法海一席话，顿时吓死地当中。

盗仙草（九）
轻装佩剑到仙山，为取灵芝救许仙；仙翁体谅白蛇情，赠送仙草快回还。

救夫（十）
得来灵芝做药汤，亲手煎药救许郎；巧言细语来释疑，还是夫妻情义长。

受骗（十一）
可恨法海心不甘，金山寺中扣许仙；定要许仙入空门，害得夫妻难团圆。

水漫金山（十二）
白蛇气恨咬牙关，青蛇双剑亦生烟；水兵神将双对垒，汹涌大水漫金山。

脱逃（十三）
许仙难念法海经，想念妻子心不宁；只身逃出金山寺，难忘恩爱夫妻情。

断桥（十四）
青蛇恼怒责许仙，白蛇劝解苦又甜；正如断桥桥不断，爱恨交织情依然。

合钵（十五）
夫妻生下小儿郎法海持钵太猖狂：拆散幸福好家庭，雷峰塔压白娘娘。

毁塔（十六）
小青回山法炼成，斩除法海毁雷峰；塔中救出白娘娘，永享团圆乐无穷。

1.The Very Begining
The West Lake in Hangzhou is a place famous for its picturesque scenery.Its clear waters.unique stor ied buildings and pavilions
,and the notable Leifeng Pagoda with its reflection casting on the shimmering wa ter are some of the most beautiful scenic attractions which have lured countless visitors.

2.Descending to the World
The two snake goddesses, Bai Suzhen and Xiao Qing, were practi-
sing Buddhism and cultivating themselves in a cloud-covered frigid cave on the summit of Mount E-mei. As they were yearning for the picturesque scenery of the region south of the Yangtze River, they changed themselves into a mistress and a maid, and descended to the earth. They arrived at the shores of the West Lake where Spring was very much in the air

3.Meeting on A Boat by Chance
Xu Xian, who hailed from Qiantang Country, went to pay respects to his deceased parents at their graves on Qingming ( Pure Brightness ) Day. When he was passing by the West Lake, he was caught in the rain and had to hire a boat to take him home. On the way, he met White Snake and Blue Snake by meer coincidence. The two snake goddesses, who had already been magically trans-
formed into two young women.requested to be taken back to the city on the same boat. It was still raining when they landed.
Xu Xian lent his umbrella to White Snake and made an arrange-
ment to pay her a visit.

4.Their Marriage
The next day, Xu Xian called on Bai Suzhen, alias White Snake to get his umbrella back. When he arrived at the portal, he was warmly welcomed by Xiao Qing who had been waiting there for him for a long time. He was immediately ushered into the hall. With Xiao Qing as a matchmaker, Xu Xian and Bai Suzhen soon got married.

5.Establishing A Drugstore
After their wedding, Xu Xian and Bai Suzhen moved from Hangzhou to Zhenjiang. Bai Niangzi ( i.e. Bai suzhen) provided funds for setting up a drugstore to make a living.The wife would practise medicine. and the husband would sell medicinal materials. They got on satisfactorily.

6.Donating Taoist magic Incantations
At the Jinshan Monastery in Zhenjiang, there was an old monk by the name of Fahai who was very jealous of Xu Xian and Bai Niangzi’s happy life. One day, Fahai managed to hoodwink Xu Xian into coming up the mountain to the monastery. He told Xu Xian : ” Your wife is a one-thousand-year-old snake demon transformed into a human being. ” When Xu Xian countered repeatedly, the monk said : ” Make her drink more realgar wine on the Dragon Boat Festival. Wait till she’s drunk, and then you’ll be able to see her original shape. ” These wordS made Xu Xian half-believing, half-doubting.

7.The Dragon Boat Festival
During the Dragon Boat Festival, there was a dragon-boat regatta held on the lake. The streets were bustling with activity. But Bai Niangzi and Xiao Qing looked dejected.
The latter took refuge in the mountains for the time being.
Her mistress found it inappropriate for her to go out. She could only pretend to be sick, and confined herself to the house. But Xu Xian asked her over and over again to drink
wine with him.In order to allay his suspicion, Bai Nianzi
had no choice but to agree.

8.Metamorphosis Caused by Drinking Wine
Bai Niangzi became intoxicated with the realga wine. Xu Xian helped her go to bed. He regretted for getting her drunk. He went to the drugstore to make up a prescription of a decoc-
tion for dispelling the effect of alcohol. When he took the decoction to her and lifted the bed-curtain, he saw a large white snake curled up on the bed. He gave out a loud cry and fell on the floor, scared to death.

9.The Theft of the Miraculous Herb
In order to save Xu Xian, Bai Zuzhen, travelling light and wearing a sword, went to the Kunlun Mountains. She intended to steal the miraculous herb, ‘ lingzhi ‘ ( glossy ganoderma ).She was critized and challenged by the two celestial boys, the Crane and the Deer.During the arduous fight,the celes-
tial old man,Nanji arrived hurriedly. He took pity on Bai Suzhen for her infatuation with Xu Xian,gave her the lingzhi as a present, and let her descend the mountain.

10.Treating the Shock
As soon as Bai Niangzi returned home,in spite of her weariness
, she quickly brought Xu Xian back to life with the immortal herb. However, Xu Xian did not clear his mind of doubt. He treated his wife very coldly.Yearning for their conjugal love of the past, Bai Niangzi tried to dispel her husband’s doubt. She used magic to transform silk ribbons into snakes,and then slew them with her sword. Gradually, Xu Xian’s shock was displaced by gladness.

11.A Visit to the Monastery
Fahai would not resign himself to being thwarted.So he decei
-ved Xu Xian and lured him to go up the mountain. He pretend
-ed to ask Xu Xian to burn joss sticks at his monastery. When Xu Xian got there, the old monk frightened him with the story of a silver snake which changed into a beautiful girl and ate up her spouse. Fahai also tried to induce him to become a monk by telling him that if he sincerely believed in Buddhism, he would be saved. On hearing this, Xu Xian realized that he had been hoodwinked. He entreated the monk to let him go home, but to no avail. He was later placed under house arrest by Fahai.

12.A Fierce Battle
When Xu Xian did not return home long after he had gone on a pilgrimage to the Jinshan Mountain, Bai Suzhen went to the monastery to implore Fahai to set her husband free. But the old monk resolutely refused to consent. Bai Suzhen came to the end of her patience. She assembled an army of aquatic animals. and used water to inundate the Jinshan Mountain. Fahai retaliated by mustering troops and generals from heaven to meet the attackers head-on. Bai Suzhen retreated in defeat because she was heavy with child and, therefore,
became tired out soon.

13.Coming Down the Mountain
Xu Xian, who was confined in the meditation room of the Jinshan Monastery. heard the deafening din of the fighting outside the gate. He became exceedingly worried. because he knew that his wife must have come to rescue him. So, he begged a small monk to release him. On his way down the mountain, he unexpectedly met Fahai who told him that Bai Niangzi had be defeated, and she had gone back to the West Lake.The monk also said arrogantly that he would give him a gust of supernatural wind to carry him to his wife to enjoy a reunion for one month.

14.The Severed Bridge
As Bai Suzhen arrived at the Severed Bridge of the West Lake
, she could not walked on due to severe labor pains. At that moment, Xu Xian was carried to the shores of the lake by a gust of wind. Xiao Qing wanted to kill him with her sword, because she hated him for being unfaithful. However, Bai Suzhen loved her husband deeply. She pleaded for him, although she reproached his inconstancy in love, Xu Xian apologized, and poured out his affection for her.The three people became reconciled, and they retumed to Hangzhou together.

15.Coming Down the Mountain

16.The Suppression of the Pagoda
Bai Suzhen was cruelly held down by Fahai under the Leifeng Pagoda. Xiao Qing went back to Mount E-mei in great sorrow. She laboriously practised Buddhism and tempered herself so as to rescue her companion. When she had finally perfected her magical powers, she went up to the Jinshan Monastery once again, and resuced Bai Niangzi by defeating Fahai and striking down the pagoda.
